What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis) is currently one of the most frequently performed elective procedures in the United States. It is a highly effective outpatient procedure used to correct most ranges of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

LASIK is a non-invasive, refractive procedure using the technology of the excimer laser. This laser produces a beam of cool light to reshape the top layer of the cornea so that images focus correctly on the retina. A computer, controlled by your Capitol Eye Care LASIK eye surgeon, is used to precisely calculate the exact amount of cornea that needs to be removed for each person's individual eyes. Numerous tests will be done on the eyes to achieve the measurements that will be treated with the laser.

The Pre-Operative LASIK Evaluation

LASIK does have restrictions and not everyone is a good candidate. You can use the following guidelines to determine if you would be a good candidate. The only true way we can determine your LASIK candidacy is with a thorough eye health pre-operative LASIK evaluation.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

Candidates for LASIK:

  • Wish to discontinue the use of glasses or contact lenses
  • Understand the true risks and science of the procedure
  • Are NOT pregnant women
  • Are over the age of 21 and have stable vision
  • Do NOT have chronic eye diseases such as keratoconus or glaucoma, or severe dry eyes
  • Have healthy corneas with a certain level of thickness
  • Will follow through with post-operative care

Patients that are not candidates for LASIK are often qualified for other refractive procedures done at Capitol Eye Care, such as PRK,Verisyse Phakic Lens Implants, or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) using premium lenses.

The LASIK Procedure

LASIK Laser Vision Correction is done using the excimer laser along with an instrument called a microkeratome to create a corneal flap, beneath which the corneal reshaping was done with the excimer. This corneal flap stays attached to the rest of the cornea by a hinge on one side. The laser is then positioned into place, and delivers a programmed number of pulses of ultraviolet light onto the newly exposed part of the cornea. Each pulse of the laser removes a microscopic layer of cornea.

The LASIK Procedure Missouri

After LASIK procedure is complete, the corneal flap is put back in place. This flap will naturally adhere to the treated cornea, without needing sutures. The shape of the cornea is now altered, correcting any refractive error and allowing light rays to be focused more precisely on the retina so that images will be seen more sharply.

Most LASIK patients notice a dramatic improvement in their vision immediately after the procedure. However, maximum improvement will occur over the next three to four weeks with the majority occurring in the first 24 hours. Both antibiotic drops and steroid drops will be used for a period of one week following LASIK surgery to ensure proper healing.

Follow-Up After LASIK

The final outcome and speed of healing of the LASIK procedure is directly related to the care that is taken of the cornea after the procedure. It is very important to keep all postoperative appointments with your LASIK surgeon. The recommended exam dates following LASIK are:

  • 1 Day
  • 2-4 Weeks
  • 3 Months
  • 1 Year

*The post-operative schedule are visits included with your LASIK procedure and no additional fees will occur. Follow-up visits after 1 year will be billed to your insurance.

Your LASIK Expectations

LASIK patients must have clear expectations of what LASIK can do. These expectations should be discussed with your LASIK eye surgeon or health care professional. Only after a thorough eye consultation will our LASIK Surgeon be able to determine your candidacy for the LASIK procedure.

We encourage you to Schedule your Free LASIK Screening to determine if LASIK is right for you!
