What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is one of the most common elective surgeries in the United States. It is a highly effective procedure that can correct most cases of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. LASIK surgery is performed in our new, in-office, state-of-the-art surgical suite, meaning that after the surgery you’ll be out of our clinic within a few hours (or less). Modern LASIK surgery uses two lasers — a femtosecond laser to make a thin, precise flap on the cornea, and an excimer laser to reshape the corneal curvature. Each laser is computer controlled and its program customized for each patient. While there are multiple outstanding laser platforms available throughout the United States, we have what we feel are the best lasers on the market— the Ziemer femtosecond laser and the Wavelight Allegretto excimer laser.

Your LASIK Evaluation

Although LASIK works for most cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, not everyone is a good candidate. You can use the guidelines below to see if LASIK is possible for you. If you meet these criteria, we can confirm your eligibility for LASIK eye surgery with a thorough eye health evaluation.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK Eye Surgery?

Candidates for LASIK:
  • Are tired of aggravating glasses or contact lenses.
  • Wish to know more about the details and possible risks of the procedure.
  • Aren’t pregnant.
  • Are 18 or older with stable vision.
  • Don’t have chronic eye diseases such as keratoconus or glaucoma.
  • Don’t have severe dry eyes.
  • Have healthy corneas with a certain minimum thickness.
  • Take their postoperative care seriously.

If you’re not eligible for LASIK, you may be a candidate for one of Capitol Eye Care’s other types of refractive surgery, such as Photorefractive Keratectomy (also known as PRK), or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) with premium lenses.

Actual candidacy will be determined upon your free in-office eye exam.

The LASIK Procedure

LASIK laser vision correction is a two-step procedure involving the use of two separate lasers — the Ziemer femtosecond laser to create a precise corneal flap, and the Wavelight Allegretto excimer laser to gently and precisely reshape the underlying cornea.

After the LASIK procedure is complete, the corneal flap is put back into place. The flap will naturally adhere to the treated cornea, so no stitches are needed. The shape of the cornea has been changed to correct refractive error, allowing light rays to more properly focus on the retina. Your world will now be more in focus!

Most LASIK patients immediately notice this dramatic improvement in their vision after the procedure. Although the majority of the improvement occurs within the first 24 hours, your vision will likely continue to improve for the next three to four weeks. Antibiotic, steroid, and lubricating drops will be used after your LASIK eye surgery to ensure proper healing.

Life After LASIK

The final product of your vision and how quickly your eyes heal depends on you. How you take care of your corneas is especially important during this time. It is vital to keep all postoperative appointments with your LASIK surgeon or co-managing eye doctor. Capitol Eye Care recommends follow up exams at the following approximate intervals:

  • 1 day
  • 1-4 weeks
  • 3 months
  • 1 year

These visits are included with your LASIK procedure and no additional fees will be incurred. Follow-up visits after one year will be billed to your insurance.

What Can LASIK Eye Surgery Do for You?

Our LASIK patients frequently describe the procedure as life-changing. It is not at all uncommon for us to see patients back months or years after the procedure and hear them describe it as the best money they have ever spent. No two eyes are exactly the same, though, and while there is no way to guarantee the results of any surgical procedure, LASIK enjoys a very high success rate with a remarkably favorable safety profile. Schedule a free LASIK screening to determine if LASIK is right for you!
